Running it standalone or from Affinity Photo I have found the time lag when using control points to be such that the Silver Efex Pro 3 is a frustration. I also haven't tried anyone else's presets for Lightroom, not sure if there are any good ones to be had as a starting point. My experience with performance is much the same as yours. I don't tend to use the more outlandish or old effect presets. I tried Topaz and couldn't see what there was to gain over a Silver Efex really.

I haven't used Silver Efex with PS, indeed I hardly know how to open PS, even though I have it! It needs to be higher up my to-do list! If you like the On1 B&W conversions, maybe that is the choice for you. Perhaps if Google ever does release a new version of Nik, they will add that, too, but don't hold your breath waiting. On1 just recently added their re-editing feature. I do think Photoshop has a better interface for working with plugins than LR, so switching to PS is pretty much automatic for me if I want to use Nik, and I don't think at all about pain. So redoing work in silver Efex is not much work for me. In practice, I rarely play with the sliders inside Silver Efex, because the presets are so good, usually one of them is usable (unlike the default B&W presets in LR). I guess everyone has their own threshold for pain. (Incidentally, the same round trip can also be accomplished with Photoshop Elements and the plug-in ElementsXXL, if you are on the perpetual Lightroom licence.) If you like Silver Efex, which I do, then you are stuck with it as is, or use the rather tortuous round trip through Photoshop as described. Lightroom certainly cannot emulate Nik's Control Point technology, but even with global edits the underlying algorithms are simply different.

In answer to your follow up question, I am afraid the answer is no.

should be in Lightroom to replicate the preset? Let me ask another question please - if I get a look I like in Silver Efex, is there a way to copy the settings to Lightroom and create a Lightroom preset? Say I like the 019 Fine Art Preset, is there a way of working out where the sliders etc. So before exiting I should be pressing 'Custom' and naming it the same as the image file before exiting, then if necessary I can go back in and recreate, but I won't be able to see what I did to create the custom, because the history is lost. So basically the History is what you've done in Silver Efex and once you've exited, the history's gone. Then you could reapply that preset if you needed to reedit.īill thank you - that's a bit of a pain! I've done quite a few images and had imagined there was a history I could get back into with Silver Efex and see what I'd done. What you could have done, though, is create a preset before you exited the first time. You can either redo your work or adjust the sky with another tool, like maybe Viveza. Once you saved the file your choices are limited. The only disadvantage, as Photoshop always warns you, is that saving layered images results in much larger file sizes. Of course you can also flatten the.psd if you want to continue editing in Lightroom. psd with their edits preserved for re-editing if needed. Rather than return a TIFF with the changes baked in, On1 returns a layered. Off topic and apologies to the op, but it's a shame that Nik haven't implemented the kind of mechanism that On1 have in Perfect Suite. If it isn't your cup of tea, that's fine with me. But there is a cost, and it may be too much for some people. You can do the same smart object/smart filter trick with any filter, for that matter. I was just pointing out how to continue an edit in Silver Efex, which seemed to be what the OP was asking about.

He could have done that with the Lightroom/Nik interface, too. Of course, you always have the option to redo the work. The smart object feature is over kill for my workflow, as I tend to group edits as I move along. With photoshop Silver Effex creates its own seperate layer which can be normally edited or discarded to start over. Or, if you happen to also have photoshop, you could use a smart object and call Silver Efex as a smart filter.
